Making research and innovation work better for young people's mental health

From understanding the evidence to delivering practical solutions that improve young people's mental health

YPMH works to reduce the prevalence and impact of mental health conditions in young people, particularly depression and anxiety, from early life through to early adulthood.

We bring together research, innovation and real-world practice to make sure evidence doesn’t stop at publication but leads to practical change. Working with partners across health, education and community settings, we identify the most promising ways to prevent mental health problems, spot them earlier and improve support and treatment.

Our role is to help effective, evidence-based approaches move into everyday use – supporting solutions that are realistic, acceptable to young people – and able to work at scale. By focusing on how the whole system works together, we aim to improve outcomes earlier and reduce the number of young people who reach crisis point.

The need for earlier, more effective action is clear:

Working towards lasting change

We want to see a future where fewer young people experience poor mental health, and those who do get the help they need early. Our mission is to:

Understand

We help deepen understanding of relationships between the social, psychological and biological factors and mechanisms that lead to mental ill health, and identify key points for prevention, early detection, better management and more effective treatment.

Innovate

We help bring promising ideas to life, using tools and insights from innovation management and systems thinking, to enable effective, evidence-based and user-acceptable solutions.

Implement

We focus on applying innovations in real-world settings to ensure impact happen - not decades from now, but today.

Collaborate

We connect researchers, innovators, practitioners, policymakers, organisations and families to generate ideas, share learning and co-develop solutions that no single group could achieve alone.
